The idea of 'asparagus staging' is that external boosters of the rocket feed their own fuel into the main engine, or into boosters that would separate later, so that at the moment of separation the craft's remaining tanks are still full, meanwhile, during the launch all engines are engaged - engines of later stages are not carried as dead weight, but contribute to thrust from moment one.

This is what is described as asparagus staging, because apparently somebody once thought the cluster of side columns made the rocket look like a clump of asparagus spears. Anyway, when side columns are both burning engines of their own as well as pumping fuel to central stages, that is asparagus staging. Incidentally it would be fantastic if there was permanent object/variable (perhaps something like STAGE:ACTIVE) telling you what stage is currently active. Third is better design. Asparagus Staging where Engines and tanks surround the main rocket, which feed into the rocket beside it around the central core then to the next to the next and then to the central core which above it has the final stage, this setup in KSP allows lifting huge spacecraft into orbit.
